Tamim Iqbal’s Heart Attack: The Life-Saving Decisions That Made All the Difference
What started as just another day on the field for Tamim Iqbal turned into a life-threatening crisis—one that could have ended in tragedy if not for a series of quick, decisive actions.
On that fateful day, Tamim was at BKSP, leading the star-studded Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club in an eighth-round fixture of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL). Meanwhile, at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) headquarters in Mirpur, officials were preparing for a board of directors meeting set to begin at noon.
But within hours, the cricket world was shaken. Instead of battling for victory on the field, Tamim was lying in a hospital bed in Savar, fighting for his life after suffering a major heart attack. News of his condition spread like wildfire—millions of fans anxiously refreshed their social media feeds, desperate for updates on the beloved cricketer. The BCB meeting was canceled, and officials rushed to Savar.
The tension eased slightly only when doctors at the KPJ Specialised Hospital in Savar announced that Tamim had regained consciousness.
A Match Played with Heavy Hearts
Despite the shocking incident, the match went on. Tamim’s teammates—Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, and Mehedi Hasan Miraz—played with heavy hearts but secured a seven-wicket victory. The moment the game ended, they wasted no time in heading straight to the hospital to be by their captain’s side.
A Critical Decision That Saved Tamim’s Life
Tamim’s ordeal began with what seemed like a minor health issue. He initially complained of gastro-liver discomfort and was taken to KPJ Specialised Hospital—just three kilometers from BKSP—for a routine check-up. After initial treatment, he returned to the venue, seemingly fine.
But things took a terrifying turn. A helicopter had been arranged to transport Tamim to Dhaka, but as he was being taken towards it, his condition worsened drastically.
"Tamim was unconscious. Dalim [team trainer] was pressing on his chest, foam was coming out of his mouth, and there was no pulse," recalled match referee Debabrata Paul, who witnessed the horrifying scene.
At that critical moment, a last-minute decision was made to rush him back to KPJ Hospital instead of proceeding with the helicopter transfer—a decision that doctors later credited with saving his life.
Swift Action and Expert Medical Care
"As the match referee, I immediately contacted the BCB CEO, Nizamuddin Chowdhury, and urged him to inform the hospital so they could prepare for Tamim’s arrival," Debabrata shared.
Everything fell into place seamlessly. "By the grace of the Almighty, we arrived to find a fully prepared medical team. Tamim was immediately taken to the emergency room, and treatment began without delay," he added.
Tamim underwent an emergency stenting procedure after an angiogram revealed severe blockages: one artery was 100% blocked, another partially. He is currently under 48-hour observation in the hospital's Coronary Care Unit (CCU).
A Timely Response That Made All the Difference
Tamim's next course of treatment will be determined soon, but one thing is clear—the swift decisions made on that crucial day played a decisive role in saving his life.
Had there been even the slightest delay, the outcome could have been devastating. But thanks to quick thinking, seamless coordination, and expert medical care, Tamim is now on the road to recovery.
His ordeal serves as a powerful reminder of how critical every second is in medical emergencies—and how a life can be saved by the right decisions at the right time.
