AB de Villiers has shared new insights into Virat Kohli’s transition from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captaincy, describing it as a collaborative decision designed to build long-term leadership under Rajat Patidar.
The South African great highlighted Kohli’s full support for the franchise’s vision, dismissing any speculation about his reluctance. Despite post-auction discussions about a potential return, RCB’s decision to back Patidar signals a strategic shift beyond IPL 2025.
AB de Villiers on RCB’s Captaincy Transition Without Virat
AB de Villiers praised Virat Kohli’s maturity in embracing RCB’s leadership change, calling it a selfless move to prioritize the team’s future.
RCB’s management, including director Mo Bobat and head coach Andy Flower, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Kohli’s crucial role in shaping the franchise’s new direction. De Villiers shared his candid thoughts on the transition:
"Andy Flower must have been thinking about this for a long time along with Mo Bobat. I'm sure they came up with a strategy where they maybe felt like it's time for a fresh look as captain... I don't necessarily think Virat turned it down. But he is in favor of the decision, which was the most important thing."
Praising Kohli’s approach, de Villiers added that his backing of Rajat Patidar underscores his commitment to RCB’s growth:
“It was a very mature reaction from Virat... You’ll see how they operate as a team on the park and if Virat really has the back of Rajat Patidar. I’m very sure he will.”
Andy Flower’s Respect for Kohli
RCB head coach Andy Flower also highlighted Kohli’s influence, noting his strong relationship with Patidar:
“He obviously likes Rajat, respects him both as a person and a player... My experience with him last season only made my respect for him grow.”
